Corporate video production follows a linear process and sucess
requires the same level of planning & attention to detail as
you should use on any other critical business process. Preparation
is crucial.
We can help you through this process with no obligation if you
contact us before you get too far into it!
You need to define the precise business objectives that any video
will fulfil, to specify the target audience and to decide on the
available budget for it.
Costs vary widely, depending on many factors:
Where the production company is located (Companies in large cities
can be 30% more expensive than those out of town)
How long the piece will be (Allow 1 minute per topic & try
to only get across 3 main ideas, no matter how long the piece)
How many locations are involved (The fewer the better but they
must be accessible)
Whether actors and/or a presenter is used
Whether the script has already been developed (A 15 minute video
calls for a script of around 1600 words & it is not uncommon
for 4 drafts to be produced before a script is finalised)
Whether a detailed storyboard has been developed
Whether music is commissioned or rights are obtained
Whether extensive graphics or titles are required
Who you want as a voiceover artist. (We have access to a range
of English voices at very competitive rates)
...........and
many others
Generally, the script is developed before the visuals & it
is important to ensure that everything is agreed and finalised
on paper before any filming occurs - Video producers often add
in 10-15% extra on costs because they've learnt that customers
commonly ask for last minute changes. This can be avoided by ensuring
that the process is got right first time. Ensuring that pre-commissioning
phase is sufficiently precise & that the pre-production phase
generates a finalised & detailed storyboard is crucial.
The storyboard is more than just a collection of pictures - it
details who what where when & how for every aspect of the production
- from the parking place for the crew to the lighting set-up & camera
angles for every shot. To see more detail about the development

With E-learning pieces, video can be used as part of the introduction
with a voice-over or it may form the major part of the program.
Suitable video might already exist & rights might be negotiated
if copyright is not currently held.
Prices are impossible to guess without the details..... But
if you need some ballpark figures.... in August 2005, a 5 minute
production at one location using a presenter & where
script & storyboard require development would cost somewhere
between £4K and £12K and a 20 minute piece would cost
somewhere around £12-20K. Clearly, if you want a 'star' to
present the video, the prices can be much higher. If you would
like to discuss your requirements with us - and we'll try
to give
you
a

idea
of the cost once we know what's involved - please use the 'Contact'
button on the left of the page.
Not surprisingly, we believe that if you commission video,
it really must have enough impact to pay for itself.
New video can be an expensive addition & we are often asked
by customers if we can use existing footage. This is often a much
cheaper alternative. A full re-edit can be done quickly & cheaply.
BUT you must hold the rights to any footage. You'll also need to
supply the original tapes (ideally in PAL format Beta, Beta SP,
DV or DVCam or NTSC DV or DVCam)
Whilst you
might have a VHS or SVHS tape, unless you intend to use it for
a web or CD presentation, it's really not of high enough quality.
We have (reluctantly!) used old VHS footage for a customer in
the past where there was no surviving professional quality tape
but the results
can
be disappointing. This is particularly true where your VHS tape
is in NTSC format & you also need the finished product in PAL.
If we are asked to produce a new video using material
that you already have - perhaps from a previous production
- we'll ask you about 'rights'. Just because you commisioned a
video in the past, doesn't necessarilly mean you own the rights.
Sometimes the production company retains the rights to the whole
piece - more commonly, some stock footage has been used within
the production & the rights to this material will remain, in most
circumstances, with its original owner.
Most people are surprised that getting rights to stock footage
can be a long and expensive process. Prices vary widely but it's
not uncommon to pay £45/second for stock video. That assumes, of
course, that you've managed to track down its rightful owner!
However, don't be put off by all this information! We are experienced
at developing products to budget & may well be able to suggest
some money saving options which don't jeopardise quality. Moreover,
we're nice people! We won't bite & we do our best to help with
every enquiry.
