This example is from an introductory course for electrical engineers. The self assessed quiz followed a short instructional piece on resistors used in electronic circuits. These components have their values marked on the component body using a colour code. The first part of the quiz for each resistor asks students to 'measure' the actual resistance of the component by moving it over the red and black 'probes' of an on-screen 'meter'. Students need to be able to decode the component's value, using the colour code they learnt earlier and compare this with the value that they measured. Each of the possible value colour codes & the main tolerance bands are represented in the test, which enables a robust assessment against the standard & performance aspects of the objectives for this section of the course. The answers here are a. 1 Megohm :10%, b. 27 Kohm:5%, C. 680 ohm:1%, d. 100 Kohm:2%, e. 47Kohm:Short circuit, f. 1 Kohm:Open circuit and g. 120 Ohm: 5%.
